Hey there, friends. Welcome back. Today I want to talk to you about something important. I want to talk about stress. More specifically, I want to talk about chronic stress in a way that goes deeper than the usual conversations about being busy or overwhelmed because chronic stress is not simply an emotional experience. It's actually a biological state that changes how the brain functions and how the body ages and how resilient we are over time. Most people think of stress as something temporary, a demanding week, difficult conversation, or pressure at work. Acute stress can actually be helpful at times, right? It can sharpen our focus, it can increase alertness and prepare the body to respond to challenges. But chronic stress is different. Chronic stress occurs when the nervous system remains in a prolonged state of activation without adequate recovery. So instead of cycling between stress and restoration, the body stays in a constant state of subtle survival mode. And over time, that state perhaps reshapes brain function. So let's talk about that a little more. So the brain is constantly evaluating safety and threat. And so when stress is perceived, the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, what we call the HPA axis, activates and releases stress hormones and such as like cortisol and adrenaline. So in short bursts, the system actually does help us to adapt.

But when stress becomes chronic, cortisol levels remain elevated and dysregulated. And that has measurable effects on brain structure and function. Areas of the brain, specifically the amygdala, which detects threat and emotional intensity, can become more reactive. That's a big part of our limbic system. And at the same time, the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that is responsible for decision making, emotional regulation and perspective, can become less active or less efficient. that emotional signals become emotional signals become louder while regulating signals become quieter. So people often describe this as feeling constantly on edge or mentally exhausted or unable to turn off their thoughts. Then this is not weakness, this is just neurobiology. So chronic stress has tremendous impact on our brain, specifically how our brain ages. And so prolonged exposure to elevated cortisol has been associated with reduced hippocampal volume. And so what this means in practical terms is that chronic stress can make the brain less flexible, less resilient, and slower to recover. And so many people notice this as brain fog or decreased focus or reduced emotional capacity. Stress does not stay confined to the brain. It alters other areas of our life, such as our sleep architecture. It disrupts blood sugar regulation, it increases inflammation and it affects hormonal balance.
