Framing A Wider Lens On Brain Health
SPEAKER_00families and those thinking long-term, there's often more going on beneath the surface that deserves attention. So today's conversation is about slowing things down a bit. It's about widening the lens and looking at how the brain is shaped by the body, by stress, by hormones, by blood sugar, by inflammation, and by the environment that we live in every single day. When conversations turn to mental health, things like anxiety, depression, brain fog, emotional overwhelm, feeling stuck, the path forward often feels very narrow. For many people, the conversation quickly moves toward diagnosis and medication. And for some, that path is definitely helpful and definitely necessary. But for others, it feels maybe incomplete. And for many families, especially parents, it raises questions: is medication the only option? Does it have to be the first step? Are there ways to support the brain before or alongside medication? That's really what this episode is all about. Because when it comes to mental and emotional health, there are definitely many ways to support the brain that don't necessarily involve immediately changing brain chemistry. There are physiological and environmental factors that influence how the brain feels and functions every single day. Stress hormones, blood sugar stability, inflammation, gut health, sleep, oxygen delivery, movement, and overall metabolic health all shape our moods. It shapes our focus and even our emotional resilience. And when those areas are supported, many people notice actual
Physiology Behind Mood And Focus
SPEAKER_00real changes in how their brain feels. And sometimes these changes are subtle and sometimes they're significant. But that doesn't mean medication is wrong. It just means that medication isn't the only way to support the brain. And before we go any further, I just want to pause here briefly and say something very important. This is not an anti-medication conversation. Medications are absolutely necessary at times. They can be life-saving, in fact. For many people, it's essential, but for others, it plays maybe more of a supportive role at the right time. And there's definitely situations where medication belongs in the care plan. But what we're doing here is expanding the lens. We're making room for the idea that medication doesn't have to be the only place in this brain health conversation, especially when we're talking about anxiety, depression, children, long-term well-being, and even longevity. So with that context in mind, let's talk about why the brain responds the way it does in the first place. When you step back and you really look at the brain, one thing becomes very clear very quickly. It doesn't operate on its own. The brain is constantly responding to signals from the rest of the body. So when someone is dealing with anxiety, low mood, or brain fog, or let's say difficulty concentrating, or if they're maybe feeling emotionally exhausted or feeling stuck, it's rarely because the brain is broken. More often the brain is responding exactly as it should to signals that are way out of balance. Once you understand that, the goal shifts. Supporting the brain becomes less about forcing it to behave differently, and it's really more about improving the conditions that the brain is operating in. And so a natural place to start with that is stress. Most of us live with some level of chronic stress, whether we realize it or not. And cortisol, which often gets labeled as a bad hormone, really is actually a big part of how we survive. Cortisol helps you wake up in the morning. In short bursts, cortisol is protective. The issue isn't cortisol itself.
Stress, Cortisol, And Brain Reactivity
SPEAKER_00The issue is what happens when stress never really turns off. When cortisol stays elevated for long periods of time or when its normal daily function gets disrupted, the brain starts to change how it functions. Areas in the brain involved in memory, emotional regulation, and threat perception become way more reactive. And over time, the brain gets very good at noticing stress and much less efficient at turning that response off. That's when people start to experience anxiety, irritability, brain fog, emotional exhaustion, trouble concentrating, or that constant feeling of just being on edge. Now, cortisol doesn't act alone. Hormones and insulin are constantly communicating with the brain about what's happening in the body. When those signals are balanced, the brain tends to regulate more easily. And when they're not, the brain responds accordingly. And right alongside hormones is blood sugar. The brain relies heavily on a steady supply of glucose. And then when the blood sugar spikes and crashes throughout the day, the brain experiences some significant responses. The stress can feel like anxiety, irritability, shakiness, sudden fatigue, emotional reactivity, or even like mood changes. And sometimes these symptoms can seemingly just come out of nowhere. SPEAKER_00highly inflammatory foods can be very impactful. For some people, emotional stability and mental clarity improve simply because the brain is no longer riding a metabolic roller coaster. Often that happens without medication. And when you start looking at stress, hormones, and blood sugar together, another system naturally comes into the conversation, and that is your gut. The gut and the brain are in constant communication with each other. Immune signaling, inflammation pathways, nutrient absorption, and even neurotransmitter production all play a role in that relationship. So when the gut is inflamed or imbalanced,
Gut-Brain Links And Functional Medicine
SPEAKER_00the brain feels it. This is why gut testing can be so important for people struggling with these things. Food sensitivities, microbiome imbalances, chronic inflammation, poor nutrient absorption, just to name a few, all of these things can influence how the brain functions. What looks like a brain issue is often a downstream effect of the gut not working properly. This is also where functional medicine really begins to matter. So functional medicine just doesn't ask questions like, what symptom do you have? It asks questions like, why is this happening? Why is cortisol elevated? Why are your hormones out of balance? Why is blood sugar unstable? Why is inflammation present? It looks at patterns over time, not just one lab at one given moment in time. And this matters because the brain doesn't age in isolation. It ages in response to things like inflammation, metabolic health, hormonal signaling, uh nutrient status, your sleep quality, and stress exposure, even across decades. So when those foundations are supported consistently, the brain becomes far more resilient, not just now, but for the long term. And once those basics are addressed, supportive therapies can definitely now be layered in very thoughtfully. And one of those is oxygen. What many people don't realize is the brain is very metabolically active. And even though it represents a very small percentage of one's body weight, it consumes a very large portion of the body's oxygen and energy. So when oxygen delivery is compromised because of things like inflammation or prolonged stress or even injury, the brain
Oxygen Delivery And Hyperbaric Therapy
SPEAKER_00has to work much harder just to function. That's why modalities like hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be so supportive of the brain. Oxygen isn't just something we breathe, it's actually essential for how our brain cells create energy, communicate, and even recover. When oxygen delivery is reduced, the brain has to function under less than ideal conditions. And that can show up in various ways, things like brain fog, emotional fatigue, slower processing, difficulty concentrating, or feeling like your brain just doesn't have the same capacity as maybe it used to. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is working by improving that environment. So during a session, a person just breathes concentrated oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. That pressure allows significantly more oxygen to dissolve into the bloodstream than normal breathing alone. Because of that, oxygen can reach tissues way more efficiently, including areas of the brain that may not be getting optimal oxygen delivery. What's important here is why that matters. So more oxygen at the cellular level is going to support energy. It's going to help calm inflammation, it's going to improve circulation and support the brain's natural repair processes. So when the brain isn't struggling to meet basic energy demands, it often becomes easier to regulate mood, focus, and emotional flexibility. This is why hyperbarics can be so supportive for people recovering from concussions or post-concussion symptoms, or for those dealing with neurological stress or injury, and for people experiencing chronic inflammation, maybe fatigue and brain fog or even long-term burnout. And something that's really important to emphasize is what hyperbarics don't do. They don't directly alter brain chemistry. They don't override emotions. They don't suppress symptoms or force the brain into a certain state. Instead, hyperbaric oxygen therapy works by giving the brain better conditions to function in. It supports the brain's own ability to regulate rather than trying to control or override it. For many people, that shift alone makes a huge difference. Not because anything was forced, but because the brain finally had the resources it needed to do what it was designed to do. Another supportive option that often comes up in conversations about brain health is something called transcranial magnetic stimulation, or what we refer to as TMS. TMS is a non-invasive therapy that works directly with the brain, but in a very gentle capacity. One of the most important things to understand from the start is that TMS does not
How TMS Works And Who It Helps
SPEAKER_00use any form of radiation. We're talking about the same level of energy in a MRI, right? But very targeted in specific areas of the brain that are targeted. And so there are no X-rays, no ionizing energy, and nothing that damages tissue. Nothing is implanted and nothing is put into the body. So a typical TMS session is actually quite simple. You're seated comfortably in a chair and you remain fully awake the entire time. And a small magnetic coil rests on the outside of the head, gently against the scalp. So during the session, the coil delivers brief magnetic pulses to specific areas of the brain that are involved in mood regulation, motivation, and emotional processing. So most people describe the sensation as a light tapping or a rhythmic clicking. The sensations are very mild and rarely cause anything like a mild headache afterwards. And these sessions usually last about anywhere from 19 to 30 minutes. And when they're finished, people return to their normal activities right away. There is no sedation and no recovery period. A patient can literally drive in themselves and drive themselves home. And so what makes TMS different from medication is that it doesn't work by changing the brain chemistry throughout the entire body. Instead, it really targets specific brain circuits that may not be functioning optimally. In many cases of things like anxiety, depression, trauma, OCD, ADHD, emotional burnout, the issue isn't that the brain is damaged. So in many cases, let's take depression as an example. The issue isn't that the brain is damaged, it's that certain areas have become underactive over time. And while stress-related pathways are being overactive, it results in a situation of imbalance. And so TMS helps to gently stimulate those quieter areas so communication between regions improves. And over time, this can definitely be helpful for the brain to regain flexibility and balance. For many people, this leads to significant improvement in their symptoms. And in some cases, symptoms largely resolve, not because the brain has been forced into a, say, a different state, but because it was supported in doing what it already knows how to do. This is why TMS is FDA approved for specific conditions like depression, OCD, and anxiety. It's actually used in many other diagnoses as well, but it's often considered for people who haven't had maybe successful treatments with medications, maybe they've experienced bad side effects, or maybe they just prefer not to rely on medications as their primary or long-term approach. Let's take children and adolescents, for example. Now, TMS can definitely be of great support and value to a child or adolescent who's struggling with certain issues with their mental health. Why? Because it's non-invasive, it's non-systemic, and people more and more are looking for alternatives to medications. There's no daily pill and no chemical load on a developing brain, which matters to many families who are exploring supportive options. And that's not to say that if you're on a medication or your child's on a medication, that we can't continue that medication while doing TMS. In fact, in times, at times, we are able to reduce medication significantly and hopefully and ideally, we're able to get people off of the medication because the TMS is actually that effective. And so at its core, TMS, again, isn't about controlling the brain. It's about
Neurofeedback And Heat Therapy
SPEAKER_00helping the brain re-engage healthier patterns and restore balance, often allowing people to feel more like themselves again. And so when TMS is combined with foundational support, like addressing stress hormones, blood sugar, inflammation, sleep, nutrition, overall health, it can become a part of a very thoughtful, integrated approach to brain health. And that's where these other modalities come in. They're not about fixing the brain, they're about helping it regulate, recover, helping the brain to adapt more easily over time. So another way of doing that is through something called neurofeedback. Neurofeedback works by giving the brain information about itself in real time. Sensors monitor brainwave activity and reflect that activity back through simple visual or auditory cues. The brain begins to recognize which patterns feel calmer, clearer, and more efficient. What's important is that nothing is imposed on the brain. There's no stimulation and no chemistry change. The brain is learning by observing itself. And because it's naturally adaptive, it gradually shifts toward healthier patterns. And this is why neurofeedback can be especially helpful for things like attention deficit disorder, anxiety, emotional regulation, and stress-related patterns, particularly in children. It is effective. It is not necessarily as effective as things like TMS, but it is a great adjunct to add to your plan of care if needed. So as the brain becomes more efficient, circulation and inflammation start to matter even more. Which brings us to something else that's very important now. I want to talk about heat therapy. Now, heat therapy, what I'm talking about is sauna use. And saunas really help support the brain by increasing circulation. And better circulation means more oxygen, more nutrients to reach the brain. And it also helps in clearing metabolic waste more effectively. And at the same time, heat helps to reduce overall inflammatory burden in
Light, Breath, Movement, And Sleep
SPEAKER_00the body. And it specifically works by helping to increase what we call heat shock proteins that actually work in helping to heal the body. When inflammation decreases, the brain often becomes less reactive. And so people frequently notice maybe they're thinking clearer, maybe their mood is improved, maybe they feel more stable in their thoughts, and maybe they have more emotional flexibility. Not because anything dramatic happened, but because the system is simply under less strain. So let's shift gears and talk about another foundational piece that ties all of this together, and that is light exposure and circadian rhythms. So the brain uses light as its primary timing signal. Morning light helps to reduce cortisol. Darkness in the evening allows melatonin to rise. And so when those rhythms are consistent, mood, focus, and emotional regulation, all of these things tend to improve. When circadian rhythm is disrupted through irregular sleep schedules, too much artificial light at night, like being on your screens, or maybe not enough daylight, the brain actually loses its sense of timing. So supporting circadian rhythm gives the brain predictable cues, which makes regulation feel easier rather than forced. And that brings us to something else that is very important. And in fact, in the most immediate way to influence your brain state is through something very simple. And it's something that we're doing every day, at every moment, without even consciously thinking about it. And that has to do with our breathing. Breath work communicates safety or stress to the brain moment by moment. Slow, intentional breathing activates calming pathways and reduces stress signaling. We call this activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. It's one of the few tools that works immediately without needing analysis or effort. So for people who feel chronically overwhelmed, breath work creates space physically, emotionally, and mentally for calm, presence, and clarity. Everything that we've discussed now is bringing us to this next topic that I want to discuss, and that is that all of this is supported by two important foundations that can't really be replaced, and that is movement and Sleep. The brain is kept healthy in a moving body. Movement improves blood flow. It supports neurotransmitter balance. It reduces inflammation and enhances neuroplasticity. So when movement is absent, we see things like mental fog and emotional fatigue begin to set in. And so when we're not moving, we need to talk about sleep. Sleep is where the brain repairs itself.
Therapy Integration And Personalized Paths
SPEAKER_00It's so important. And during sleep, metabolic waste is cleared, emotional experiences are processed, and neural pathways are actually reorganized. So no modality can fully compensate for inadequate sleep. And finally, there's something else that's really important to talk about that is also important in one's brain health. And that involves counseling and therapy. Therapy plays a critical role in integrating the emotional experiences, maybe reshaping meaning and building healthier relational patterns. But therapy often works best when the brain and the body are supported physiologically, when there's alignment, when the body feels safer and more regulated. We see that insights maybe land more deeply and change actually becomes sustainable. When you step back and you look at all of this together, you might see a pattern start to emerge. What I want to communicate is that really none of these approaches are about forcing the brain to behave differently. They're not about suppressing symptoms or overriding emotions. They're about supporting the conditions the brain needs in order to function well. So whether we're talking about cortisol and stress or hormones, blood sugar, gut health, oxygen delivery, circulation, sleep, or rhythm, the common thread is environment. The brain responds to the environment it's given. So when stress is chronic, when inflammation is high, when blood sugar is unstable, when sleep is disrupted, or when the body is depleted, the brain adapts the only way that it knows how to. And so things like anxiety, low mood, brain fog, emotional reactivity, these are often the signals that a depleted brain manifests. So that's why modalities like hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be so helpful because it improves oxygen delivery and reduces inflammatory strain. And that's why TMS can be so effective. Not because it overrides the brain, but because it actually helps to heal the brain, particularly those underactive
Options Over Either-Or Thinking
SPEAKER_00circuits to help those areas to re-engage. And that's why when we look at all of these approaches together, we can have such a positive impact because they each support regulation in different ways. And of course, none of this excludes medication. And for some people, medication is absolutely essential, but for others, it's more supportive. And for some, especially children and families, it may not be the first choice that they want to start with. So the point isn't choosing maybe necessarily one path over another. The point is having options. Supporting the brain doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing decision. It can be a thoughtful, layered, and individualized approach. It can change over time and it can honor both the biology of the brain and the person living inside it. So when the body is supported, the brain follows. And so when the brain has what it needs, regulation becomes easier. And when regulation improves, clarity, resilience, and emotional range tend to improve. If there's one thing to take with you from this conversation, it's that when it comes to brain health, there are often way more options than we're initially told. Supporting the brain doesn't have to start with forcing change. It can actually begin with understanding, it can begin with curiosity and creating better conditions over time. Just remember if you can change your brain, you can absolutely change your life. However your path looks, it deserves to be thoughtful, informed, and aligned with what matters most to you. That's what your health, your way is all about.
